Inside the Sechenov Leaders Program Curriculum Over Six Years
A medical degree is a long commitment, so it helps to understand early on how the years fit together. The Sechenov Leaders program curriculum follows a single specialty, General Medicine, over six years of English-language study, and leads to a Specialist degree and the qualification of Medical Doctor. What makes it distinctive is that four strands of learning are combined rather than taught in isolation.

Strand one: the scientific foundation
Every doctor needs a solid grasp of how the human body works, both in health and in disease. The fundamental disciplines provide that grounding. Students study the theoretical basis of medicine and learn how normal physiological processes differ from pathological ones. This stage is not treated as a hurdle to clear before the “real” medicine begins; it is the framework onto which later clinical knowledge is attached.
Strand two: turning knowledge into clinical skill
Clinical training is where theory meets the patient. The aim is to integrate what students have learned in the basic sciences with hands-on clinical skills, so that understanding a mechanism leads naturally to choosing a diagnostic test or a treatment. Practice takes place in leading Moscow medical institutions, among them federal-level clinics equipped with modern technology. Students work on genuine clinical cases with experienced mentors, and the track offers more practical training than the standard General Medicine route.
Strand three: research
The third strand introduces students to scientific work. Additional research disciplines are part of the programme, and students take part in both fundamental and applied projects. Under the supervision of leading teachers, they learn to defend their results and prepare them for publication. Access to the university’s laboratories and scientific base supports this work. The research environment at Sechenov University is broad, covering fields such as genomics, proteomics, regenerative medicine, neuroscience and AI in medicine, and it brings medical specialists together with biologists, engineers and IT experts.
Strand four: a six-year leadership programme
Running alongside the medical curriculum for the entire six years is a dedicated leadership development programme. It is not a single course but a continuous thread. Its focus includes:
- making decisions under uncertainty;
- leading a team in clinical settings;
- managing one’s own work and development;
- coaching colleagues;
- communicating effectively, including presenting research.
Students can also join international conferences, internships and seminars, master classes and extracurricular projects, which give them a chance to apply these skills outside the classroom.
How the strands work together
The value of this structure comes from the way the strands reinforce one another. Foundational science gives meaning to clinical observations; clinical work raises questions that research can address; and leadership training prepares students to act on what they know in a team. Digital health topics and innovative approaches to research are woven into the programme as well. Each student follows an individual track, which can include an extended range of disciplines and additional internships, supported by a personal curator and small-group teaching.
